In 1917, Mt. Clair Missionary Baptist Church was established, and services were held at the home of Reverend and Mrs. Thomas Singletary. Years later, the white Baptist built a new church and donated their old church to Rev. Singletary and the Mt. Clair members. Rev. Singletary later moved to North Carolina and Rev. Henry Graham assumed the role as pastor. He served until his death. In 1937, Rev. C.B. Black Sr. succeeded Rev. Graham and through Rev. Black’s leadership and guidance, the church was rebuilt.
In 1970, Rev. W. L. Thompson assumed the pastoral duties of Mt. Clair. Under his leadership, brickwork was completed, and the Cornerstone was laid. The mortgage was paid in full by 1972. Other accomplishments during Rev. Thompson’s tenure include: central heating/air conditioning and public address system were installed. The church purchased its first electric organ and additional land. In 1985. the mortgage was again paid in full. In 1986, Rev. Thompson’s tenure ended after he accepted a full-time position in Dovesville, South Carolina. The first two months of 1987, Mt. Clair was without a pastor; however, the membership stayed together.
In March 1987, Dr. W. E. Chaney answered Mt. Clair’s call and was installed as the church’s fifth pastor in May 1987. Dr. Cheney’s tenure ended in 1993, and Rev. Thompson returned and pastored until March 2016. During Rev. Thompson’s second tenure, the current land and church was purchased and built in 2004.
In July 2016, Rev. Reginald Elmore was elected as the sixth pastor of Mt. Clair Missionary Baptist Church. In 2021, a new sound system was purchased. Rev. Elmore had a vision to purchase the land across the street from the current church for a community cemetery and elderly housing. In June 2021, that vision came to fruition when Mt. Clair purchased approximately 42 acres of land. In January 2024, the East Main Memorial Park (EMMP) was dedicated and open for business.
